Circulation & Borrowing Policies
All matriculating students at Providence College are eligible to borrow from the Phillips Memorial Library. In order to borrow items from the library, students will need to bring appropriate identification. Students with PC ID cards should bring their PC ID cards to the circulation desk. Students without PC IDs should bring photo ID and proof of admission with School of Continuing Education or their Graduate program office. Students from other colleges belonging to the Higher Education Library Information Network (HELIN) need to bring their own college identification card in order to borrow materials from the Phillips Memorial Library.
All students, regardless of status, are allowed to check out a maximum of 50 books at a time. The loan period is approximately one month, with two renewals for PC books and one renewal for books from HELIN schools. Students are allowed to borrow from all current HELIN institutions and can also place interlibrary loans for books outside of the HELIN network.
Overdue and Billed Books
Missing books will be searched in the stacks for 3 to 6 months before reordering. Users with Overdues are given a grace period of seven days. After this period, items automatically become overdue. After 60 days, overdue material becomes billed material. Patrons are billed $50 for each billed item and are sanctioned. Once sanctioned, the patron’s HELIN privileges are suspended until the billed material is returned or replaced. Replacement charges are added to the user’s account if material is not returned after the billing notice. For Providence College patrons, at the end of each semester, the library forwards all bills for graduating seniors to the treasurer’s office. Students will need to return the materials before they can gain access to their transcripts. All library books can be returned to the circulation desk. The library accepts books from other HELIN schools and will return them to the proper school by way of our delivery system.
Using HELIN Libraries
PC ID holders may also borrow materials directly from other HELIN libraries. Students with current PC IDs, with accounts in good standing at Providence College library, have access and borrowing privileges at any HELIN library and can check out most books, as well as some videos and DVDs. Most other material can be used onsite. Check the catalog first for more information.
PC students may borrow up to 50 items for about a month. These items are usually renewable twice online or in person. There may be charges, if material is not returned promptly. Charges accrued at a HELIN Library may be transferred to your PC Library and/or Bursar account.
