Staff Spotlight: Janice

What is your day to day like?

I’m responsible for the library’s electronic resources (databases, etc.) and print and online serials.

What is your favorite library activity?

I don’t usually participate in the activities, but I love that we offer puzzles for students to work on. It’s always interesting to see the puzzles as they’re being completed.

What is your favorite part of working at the library?

I love the teamwork. Everyone is willing to pitch in where there’s a need. We no longer have silos of departments, which was a great change. All of us are dedicated to providing the highest quality collections and services possible for the college’s students, faculty, and staff.

Who is your favorite author?

David McCullough. His history books cover interesting topics such as the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Johnstown Flood, and my absolute favorite, John Adams, among many others.

What is your favorite study space?

The main floor near the display cases, which is the area where our bound periodicals were previously housed. I love seeing students studying there, either alone or in a group.

I spent my junior year in college (in the 1980s!) in Hamburg, West Germany (before the reunification), and my undergraduate degree is in German. My parents were both raised on farms in Kansas, and I grew up in St. Louis and attended college in Indiana, so I have strong Midwest ties.

What is something most students don’t know about the library?

Students might not be aware that in addition to our subscriptions to online journals, we have access to many thousands of full-text journals through our databases.

What do you do for fun?

I have three grown sons and four grandchildren and love spending time with them whenever possible. My husband and I also recently added a Maltese puppy, Finian “Finn,” who’s now 10 weeks old, to our family, and it’s a joy to spend time with him. I have been learning to crochet for over a year and have made blankets, a sweater, an octopus for our grandson, and car seat ponchos for our granddaughters, among other things. I’m currently working on a sweater for Finn using a granny square pattern. I also try to prioritize doing things with friends. I especially enjoy plays and museums.
