Staff Spotlight: Nicholas

What is your day to day like?

My job is to oversee the department that builds and maintains the library collections (print books, ebooks, journals, databases, etc.). That means that on any given day I can be responding to faculty purchase requests, sorting through book donations, making sure that we stay on budget, or troubleshooting problems with vendors.

What is your favorite library activity?

My favorite activity is to walk through the stacks and browse random shelves. I am partial to the old book smell and the randomness of discovering something that has been sitting on the shelves for years.

What is your favorite part of working at the library?

I started working in libraries because librarians were the most fun to be around. Every person in the library is smart, cares immensely about what they do, and has the most varied interests outside of work.

What is your favorite study space?

I like the darkest, quietest, most remote carrels for studying. There are a few of these scattered on the outside of the stacks..

What do you do for fun?

You are most likely to find me on long walks exploring Providence with my two dogs.

Providence, Rhode Island Skyline

I am a dual US-Italian citizen, and my wife and I plan on bouncing around Europe when we retire. So I’m always working on my German-Italian-French language skills, usually by watching European television shows!

Who is your favorite writer?

I wrote my doctoral dissertation on Ralph Waldo Emerson because I could read his work again and again. But these days I am much more likely to be reading small press comics over everything else

What is something most students don’t know about the library?

So much of what the library does is driven by students. If you have an idea about what the library can do, let us know and we can try to make it happen!
