At Providence College, the arts have always been a cornerstone of our vibrant campus life. From the early days of the orchestra and Glee club to the dynamic productions of today, our commitment to fostering creativity and artistic expression has only grown stronger. This dedication is beautifully showcased in our Theater, Dance & Film digital collection in Digital Commons, as well as the ongoing exhibit, “20 Years of Creativity: Celebrating the Smith Center for the Arts.”
Theater, Dance & Film Digital Collection
Our digital collection in Digital Commons is a treasure trove of historical and contemporary works from the Theater, Dance, and Film departments. Spanning from 1969 to current productions, this collection offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of these artistic disciplines at Providence College. Whether you’re interested in viewing production photos, playbills, or promotional materials, the collection provides a rich resource for students, faculty, and the broader community.
One notable aspect of the collection is its accessibility. By digitizing these materials, we ensure that the legacy of our Theater, Dance, and Film departments is preserved and made available to a global audience. This initiative not only supports academic research but also allows alumni and art enthusiasts to reconnect with the performances and productions that have shaped our institution’s artistic heritage.

“20 Years of Creativity: Celebrating the Smith Center for the Arts” Exhibit
In conjunction with our digital collection, we are proud to present the exhibit “20 Years of Creativity: Celebrating the Smith Center for the Arts.” This year-long exhibit, located on the main floor of Phillips Memorial Library, commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Smith Center’s dedication. Through rotating displays, the exhibit invites visitors to explore the dynamic evolution of theater, dance, film, music, and art galleries at Providence College.
The exhibit features a variety of materials, including costumes, posters, and historical documents, that highlight the rich artistic legacy of the Smith Center. Visitors can learn about the origins and evolution of each department, from the early days of the Blackfriars Theatre in Harkins Hall to the state-of-the-art facilities we enjoy today. The exhibit also includes interactive elements, allowing visitors to engage with the history and creativity that have defined the Smith Center over the past two decades.
The Theater, Dance & Film digital collection in Digital Commons, along with the “20 Years of Creativity” exhibit, offers a unique opportunity to celebrate and explore the artistic achievements of Providence College. We invite you to visit the exhibit, delve into the digital collection, and join us in honoring the creativity and dedication that continue to inspire our community.
