Awards and Honors:

2022 HELIN Award. I received the 2022 HELIN (Higher Education Library Information Network) Award in Honor of Dr. D. Russell Bailey, director of the Phillips Memorial Library at Providence College at the time of his death in 2020. This year’s award honors a project that “best demonstrates effective use of data for the improvement of library collections, operations or services.” The project is titled “Collection, Organization, Analysis, and Application of Usage Data to Inform an Academic Library 's Annual Electronic Resource Renewal Decisions.” The objective is to compile, analyze and visualize usage data and cost per use calculations for as many of our database subscriptions and other electronic resources as possible, to allow discussions about renewals and cancellations to be based on quantifiable data instead of on anecdotal evidence that we used prior to starting the project in 2019. Here’s what the reviewers said: “The project employed an effective analytical model using both quantitative and qualitative data to significantly reduce spending on underused resources. The scope of the project was broad and the model it used has the potential to be usable and scalable in libraries of varying size. While this project focuses on subscription cancellations, the savings it generates will impact the ability of the library and institution to develop a more sustainable financial model overall, including the ability to grow collections or services that will better serve the campus.” I also published an article on the project in 2021: http://works.bepress.com/janice_schuster/40/ HELIN (Higher Education Library Information Network)
