Hats Off to Providence College

PC bucket hat, 1931

Hats off to Providence College! Check out some of the many hats (and helmets) from the Providence College Archives and Special Collections, all worn by PC students throughout the years.

From a 1929 graduation mortarboard to a winning helmet from the 2015 men’s ice hockey National Championship, this exhibit is a fun way to look at some of PC’s history!

Did you know we had a football team?! Providence College once had a robust football program which ran until World War II. You can see many images from the early team here in our digital collections. The team was later reprised as a club sport and thrived until the 1980s; the helmet on display is from that era.

Prior to Providence College becoming a coeducational institution, all Freshman students were required to wear class beanies. The PC Archives and Special Collections holds several of these woolen hats that represented the start of a four year academic journey at Providence College for many years.
